Robert Cantrell

Robert also serves as an innovation coach for enterprises seeking to systematically invent and file patent applications in high‑value technology sectors, safeguarding critical research and development investments. Applying his extensive patent law expertise for Lyons Law Group, he prepares and prosecutes U.S. and international patent applications, advises on patent prosecution strategies, and consults on building and managing strategic patent portfolios to enhance enterprise value. He is also on the faculty of Patent Resources Group (PRG), where he teaches Patent Strategies for Business.

Before joining Jimenez IP Law, Robert was an innovator, project manager, and registered patent agent at Walmart Inc., where he guided more than one hundred inventors—primarily in the data science field—through defining their ideas and filing patent applications. As an inventor himself, he is named on over 150 filed patent applications spanning unmanned ground and aerial systems, distribution center logistics, blockchain innovations, and store‑of‑the‑future technologies.

Earlier in his career, Robert worked as a business development executive and led intellectual property research and analysis teams, providing IP strategy consulting and managing “patent hunter‑killer” teams to defend corporations against non‑practicing entities. These experiences shaped his understanding of universal invention and patent strategy principles, enabling innovators to transfer insights across industries. He explores these concepts in his book Outpacing the Competition: Patent‑Based Business Strategy, published by John Wiley & Sons.

Before entering the commercial patent and innovation arena, Robert served as an Airborne Infantry Officer in the 101st Airborne Division.
